10 Scrumptious Looks From The Spring Collections
In celebration of the upcoming collections, we picked a few of our favorite pieces to immortalize in gingerbread—with a little help from Delish.
Ever see an ensemble that just looked good enough to eat? It’s a feeling we’ve grown accustomed to as we continue to receive new arrivals from some of our favorite brands. With that in mind, we turned to our friends over at the food site Delish for an inspired challenge—turning some of these tasty, stand-out Spring ’16 pieces into edible art in the form of chic gingerbread ladies, just in time for the holidays.
Capturing spring’s freshest silhouettes and breezy color palettes, these couture confections are the handiwork of food stylist Jason Schreiber, whose work has also been seen via the likes of Martha Stewart and Bon Appétite. Putting his well-honed talents to use in gingerbread was a challenge Schreiber gladly accepted, so we asked him for a bit of insight into his process.

Turns out that not all outfits are created equal, and some translate better into icing than others. “The looks that tend to work the best are the ones that have something iconic—either a unique silhouette, a bold pattern, or some kind of special detail,” Schreiber says. “As an example, one of the looks we initially considered had a black leather jacket—it looks great on the runway, but on a cookie I was concerned it would just read as an amorphous blob.”

Lucky for us, he had no such problems when it can to flawlessly recreating spring dresses from the likes of Proenza Schouler, Nina Ricci, Altuzarra, and Lanvin in gingerbread. Ranging from flowing maxi dresses to more tailored pieces, the looks were unified—both on the runway and out of Schreiber’s kitchen—by the little touches that set them apart. “The most fun part is putting the finishing touches on the cookies, because it’s the small details that really bring them to life,” Schreiber told us. He also shared a few tips on miniaturizing the looks in cookie form. “When it comes to the details, I pipe some of them on with tiny tips or paper cornets, and paint other details on with brushes.”

Beyond creating edible couture, we were curious as to what Schreiber’s own food-related holiday traditions might be, since he’s constantly surrounded by tasty treats. “My friend Paul, who is especially fond of the holiday season, hosts a weekly party on Sunday evenings in November and December that we affectionately call ‘Christmas Club,’” Schreiber says. “Our friends gather at his house to eat cookies and watch a movie—one that references Christmas at least a little—but everyone knows the real draw is Paul’s mom’s secret chocolate chip cookie recipe. I actually know the secret, but I’ll never tell!”
